I am pleased to welcome you to my Ward 10 website. I hope you find the information displayed on the following pages useful and informative.
As your elected Alderman for 2007-2010, I am always looking for ways to improve the quality of life for you - my constituents.
I hope you and your family take every opportunity to enjoy what Ward 10 has to offer: from our skating rinks, swimming pools and golf course, our many parks and trails; to our family-oriented community network programs and services. I hope you agree Ward 10 is a wonderful place to live, work and play.
We as a community are successful because we have been able to manage and embrace modest change. It was Charles Darwin who said, 'It is not necessarily the strongest or the smartest who survives. It is those who can adapt and accept change'.
Managing change requires community leaders who are alive to innovation and creativity; leaders who support and are accountable for the continuous renewal of goals and objectives within their community; leaders who understand and communicate new opportunities and challenges in a meaningful way to friends, family, neighbours, businesses, and government.
As a community our greatest challenge for renewal is now before us as we continue to forage ahead with the local area planning initiatives such as International Avenue Corridor Study, Trinity Park Development, traffic claming in the Crossroads community and park redevelopments. The challenge is to ensure all Ward 10 communities of the future continue to have a vibrant focus where all our diverse citizens can live, work and play comfortably and safely.
As your Alderman I encourage all Ward 10 citizens to become involved in the local area planning public community forums which will take place throughout the year. There is no more important a task for a community than planning for its future. Ward 10 is our home, Ward 10 is our community. Your input to help establish a direction for a 'Ward 10 of the Future' is a most valuable and important community contribution.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for the confidence you have placed in me.

09/02/2010 - Black Cart Garbage Collection
The City of Calgary is rolling out city-wide automated Black Cart Garbage Collection starting in the fall of 2010 with completion by summer 2011. Black Cart service will roll out by quadrant starting in the Southeast in October, Northeast in November, Northwest in April and Southwest in June. Automated collection uses trucks equipped with mechanical arms to collect garbage from black, wheeled carts. Black carts are similar in size to the blue recycling carts.
Black carts result in cleaner, more efficient and safer garbage collection. Black carts keep litter in and pests out. Automated collection is more efficient as fewer truck operators are required and it's safer as it reduces injuries related to hand collection of heavy bags and sharp objects.
The city-wide expansion follows a successful Black Cart pilot in six communities. Over 15,000 pilot households found the black cart easy to use (88 per cent) which resulted in high satisfaction scores (93 per cent very satisfied/satisfied). In particular, pilot participants reported that the carts were easy to use and resulted in cleaner streets and alleys. There is no additional fee for Black Cart collection.
Once you receive your cart, you can start using it immediately.
For FAQ's or to see when your community is expected to receive the Black carts, please visit www.calgary.ca/blackcart
07/21/2010 - Emergency Road Closure
36 Street between Memorial Drive and 4 Avenue NE will be reduced to one northbound lane effective immediately until approximately 6 a.m. tomorrow to accommodate a water main break. We will provide additional details as work progresses.
These are part of a number of ongoing road closures and lane restrictions in Calgary. For more information on these closures, please visit www.calgary.ca/trafficinfo.
07/19/2010 - Take the Pledge - Save Water
This summer The City of Calgary is asking citizens to pledge to "Do Nothing to Save Water."
When you pledge to Do Nothing to Save Water you don’t need to water your lawn when:
- It's raining, has recently rained or is forecast to rain
- It's the hottest time of the day (between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.)
- It's windy.
Calgary's water usage during the summer months can increase by 50 per cent. By taking the pledge you will join your fellow Calgarians to conserve water and reduce the strain on our rivers and water treatment plants.
"Most people don't know that a healthy lawn only needs one inch of water per week and that includes rainfall", says Stuart Peters, Residential Programming with The City of Calgary’s Water Services. "Too much water can be bad for your lawn – resulting in shallow root growth and making it prone to disease. By taking the pledge to Doing Nothing to Save Water, you can avoid watering when your lawn doesn’t need it."
Peters' also notes watering during the hottest time of the day or windy periods results in a lot of water being evaporated into the air instead of getting to the grass roots where it's needed.
The City of Calgary is on track to reduce our water consumption by 30 per cent in 30 years. City operations are doing their part by checking and fixing leaks, upgrading treatment facilities to use less water and expanding water wise technology in parks.

Donations needed for Staples for Education
The City of Calgary Community & Neighbourhood Services has teamed up with Staples stores to ensure children of low income families have the supplies they need to succeed in school. With a recent tally of donations we are able to support 1,400 backpacks - 2,100 backpacks shy of meeting this year’s requests.
"Our goal this year is to fill 3,500 backpacks, but we are only at less than half of our goal with three weeks left of the program. We are calling out to Calgarians to visit the Staples Stores in Calgary and make a donation to help us reach our goal. A $40 donation can give a complete backpack to a child-in-need," says Carmen Marquez, a youth social worker with Community & Neighbourhood Services who has been involved in the program for the past five years.
Make a difference and help us fill a backpack by donating at any Staples Store in Calgary today. Donations of cash and/or purchase of suggested grade appropriate supplies can be done at any Staples store in Calgary on or before Sept. 18, 2010. Donations totalling $100 or more are eligible for a tax receipt from The City.
To learn more about this program, please visit calgary.ca/staplesforeducation or your local Staples store.
